The grooms come on horses or elephants (or sometimes, even in helicopters!) adorned in traditional Indian costume, the brides come in palanquins (or limos if you so prefer) and the whole family arrives for the wedding from India and all over the world.

A week-long wedding is a common occurence amongst South Asians – covering the gamut of pre-wedding and post-wedding ceremonies, including Mehandi (henna tattoos), Sangeet (the Indian version of the bridal shower party complete with music and dance), Baraat (the arrival of the groom), Pheras (circling of the sacred fire, signifying marriage), Vidaai (the departure of the bride from her parents’ home) amongst others.  As you can see, a day is simply not long enough!

In this section you will find little snippets of information – tools to help up make sense of this kaleidoscope called "The South Asian Wedding," especially as it happens in New Jersey and the Tri-State area. So whether you are an Asian Indian or American seeking to understand more about the South Asian and Indian culture, looking for some handy tips on how to make your wedding resplendent or if you are looking for a wedding vendor specializing in South Asian weddings in the New Jersey.
