Until I was invited to a Chinese wedding I had no idea how different they were to weddings from a western background. My friend Jiao from work had invited our whole team to the ceremony and although her husband is from a Christian background she wanted to include some Chinese rituals.

In Chinese culture they are very family orientated and both families are very much involved from the start for the preparation of the wedding. Jiao had said she was lucky as both parties were happy to be involved and respected their wishes to combine the wedding with both Chinese and Christian elements.

South Asian Indian Weddings.jWith a special emphasis on Indian wedding celebrations in NJ, NY & PA.  It’s a world full of fresh scented flowers, sacred fires, pundits, week-long celebrations, elephants, horses, camels and hundreds of ceremonies – all packed into one big family wedding!

The grooms come on horses or elephants (or sometimes, even in helicopters!) adorned in traditional Indian costume, the brides come in palanquins (or limos if you so prefer) and the whole family arrives for the wedding from India and all over the world.

A week-long wedding is a common occurence amongst South Asians – covering the gamut of pre-wedding and post-wedding ceremonies, including Mehandi (henna tattoos), Sangeet (the Indian version of the bridal shower party complete with music and dance), Baraat (the arrival of the groom), Pheras (circling of the sacred fire, signifying marriage), Vidaai (the departure of the bride from her parents’ home) amongst others.  As you can see, a day is simply not long enough!

The Sherwani - Fit for a PrinceGrooms preparing for an Indian style wedding have the luxury of choice when it comes to choosing their wedding attire. The sherwani is a traditional Indian-style groom wear originating from the royal families in the North of India.

The sherwani consists of a streamlined jacket that extends knee length and is sometimes longer. The jacket is uniquely designed with a Nehru-style collar and buttoned down the front. The Sherwani is usually teamed up with a tight fitting churidar, Jodhpurs, and a shawl draped over one or both shoulders.
