Well I think nobody can have failed to notice the massive fashion buzz created by this week’s super-exciting news of the royal engagement! Once again, the prospect of a royal wedding is in the air, thanks to the declaration of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and of course the question everyone is asking: who will design The Dress?

The news has sparked a veritable clamour among fashionistas, all anxious to put in their two cents about who has what it takes to see Kate looking fabulous down the aisle. According to the Guardian newspaper, “fashion insiders” are predicting that the dress will be “classical, demure” and – of course – a creation of one of Britain’s top designers. There’s never been a better time for the top frockmakers to fly the flag! Tatler editor Catherine Olsen said: “She could go for a big British designer like Christopher Bailey at Burberry.

“He is obviously one of the most high-profile British fashion names. Or she might go for someone who is more wedding-established, a pro like Bruce Oldfield,” she suggested. However, British Vogue’s fashion features director Harriet Quick was quick to name the UK fashion man of the moment Erdem as a possible contender, or failing that, Alexander McQueen’s creative director Sarah Burton.

“It would be lovely to see her in an Erdem lace and silk gazaar gown with a train and veil. Erdem has a grace in his designs and a stately poise that feels timeless,” she mused, although Harriet also suggested that Sarah B would give the royal wedding a sense of “romance and English heritage.”Let’s face it, at this stage anything is possible. But rest assured, I’ll be keeping a beady eye on Kate and Wills every step of the way!
