The designers for Princess Diana’s wedding gown have revealed that they created a spare dress for the Princess as a precautionary measure in the 1981-fairy-tale wedding at Westminster Abbey. Elizabeth Emmauel of Elizabeth and David Emmanuel designs told People.com that there was a reserve, a back-up dress which had served as ‘stand-in’ had Princess Diana’s dress was discovered before the actual Royal wedding ceremony.

"At the time we wanted to make absolutely sure that the dress was a surprise," Emmanuel was quoted as saying by People. Should they fail to keep the dress a secret, the newly unearthed wedding dress of the Princess would have made it to the altar instead. Emmanuel added, "Had the secret of the real dress got out it's possible that Diana would actually have worn this one.

People.com described the dress as an ‘ivory silk taffeta gown’, with same ruffles around the neck like the ones found at the original dress. The stand-in dress however, did not have the ‘signature lace’ according to the designer. The designers noted that the gown was created ‘in case of emergency’, adding Princess Diana’s spare wedding never reaches it finishing touches and was never completely finished.

"We didn't try it on Diana. We never even discussed it," Emmanuel noted, according to People. "We wanted to make sure that we had something there; it was for our own peace of mind, really."The designer noted that the public were anxious what Diana would wear on her big day when she married Prince Charles in 1981.
